State CTE Qualifiers Recognized by Board of Trustees

Feb. 24, 2023 - The Comal ISD Board of Trustees recognized 13 Career and Technical Education (CTE) state qualifiers during its regular board meeting on Feb. 23.

Students who are involved in CTE organizations have many opportunities to sharpen their leadership and technical skills through various competitions. The Board recognized students who qualified for state in just a few of the district’s active CTE organizations. More state qualifiers will be honored in the coming months.

First off, the FFA Radio Team from Canyon Lake High School was recognized for qualifying and placing 4th in the state competition. Team members include Katelynn Fields, Milo Martin-Rider and Dean Platt. Their teacher is Garrett Schatte.

From Davenport High School, Kara Kirkpatrick was recognized for qualifying for state in the Greenhand Creed Speaking. She placed 7th in state. Her teacher is Cody Poerner.

Students involved in Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) qualified for state competition including Cicialy Packer from Smithson Valley High School who placed 4th in the region competition for Fashion Design Level 3, while Riley O’Sullivan and Arantza Sztaba from Canyon High School advanced to state for Interior Design. Their teachers are Shauna Douglas at SVHS and Precious Aujon at CHS.

The final CTE state qualifiers will compete in the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) competition. The Mental Health Promotion team from Pieper High School which includes Taylor Allen, Claire Harris, Hailey Taylor and Johanna Woods, qualified for state, as did Andy Thomason from SVHS who placed third at the area conference in extemporaneous writing. Health science teachers include Michael Herrera from PHS and Nicole Antenen and Caroline Osburn from SVHS.
